Philosophical Discourses

Maha-Mandeleshwar Swami Abhishek Chaitanya Giri Maharaj will present discourses in Hong Kong from 15 to 28 June 2017. The discourses are an opportunity for students of Yoga to reflect more deeply on the philosophical precepts of Yoga. A student can clarify concepts, apply these concepts to one's own experiences, and ultimately, gain a deeper understanding of one's self.

There will be two streams of discourses, a stream based on a text called "Blessings of the Enlightened One" and a stream on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. There will also be a discourse on living the Yogic Life. Swamiji will also deliver a talk for Hong Kong's International Day of Yoga celebration - see the International Day of Yoga article for more information.

Discourse: Blessings of the Enlightened One

Swamiji will present discourses drawing from a text called Brahmavida Ashirwadah (Blessings of the Enlightened One). The premise of this text is the question: If you met a Brahmajñāni (an enlightened one), what would you ask of him/her? If a seeker is unaware of what ought to be sought from such a master, he/she fails to realise the potential of such an opportunity and gets caught in his own projections, in his own preferences. Swamiji will also draw from The Bhagavad Gita.

Exposition on The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

Swamiji will lead interested students in a detailed study of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. This will involve investigation, inquiry and reflection on each sutra and it’s meaning.

Since these are the most important elements of fruitful life, lifestyle based on an understanding, offering to blossom these virtues in life is important. About Maha-Mandeleshwar Swami Abhishek Chaitanya Giri Maharaj

Maha-Mandeleshwar Swami Abhishek Chaitanya Giri Maharaji is currently the head of Jagadguru Sannyasa Ashram in Rishikesh. In his earlier years, Swamiji studied Psychology and Behavioural Sciences at Bombay University. During this period he saw and heard Pujya Swami Chinmayananda for the first time. The Master’s strong conviction of Truth remained with him long after this first introduction to Vedanta. He went on to complete the Brahmachari course of the Chinmaya Mission, and following this period he has studied under other respected teachers of Vedantic and Bhakti texts.

While maintaining the spiritual traditions of the Ashram and putting in efforts to take the Ashram to greater heights of glory, Swamiji also travels to places in India and to countries like Malaysia, Hong Kong, Philippines, Indonesia, Italy and France where eager gatherings welcome him.

Yoga - The Hope for the Future, by Maha-Mandeleshwar Swami Abhishek Chaitanya Giri Maharaji

The world is embroiled in the storms of ideologies, idiosyncrasies, religious dogma and blatant materialisms. Man living in this time is desperate to find a way out of this madness. The important question before humanity today is, "Is it possible to find a sense of togetherness without losing the beauty of diversity?" Yoga stands very silently but firmly offering a solution to humanity without condemning any form of faith or threatening religious sentiments. Hence, the solution offered by Yoga to the world is indeed very valuable. One needs to understand the yogic perspective of life.

Not only does Iyengar Yoga cater for all types of physical bodies, it also offers ways of practicing Yoga for the differences in the subtle bodies (mental and emotional bodies). As people are of a different mental and emotional makeup, B. K. S. Iyengar has expertly prescribed Yoga taking into account these differences. This session will demonstrate how Yoga can truly be practiced by everyone.

Celebrating The Life of Yogacharya BKS Iyengar

December 14 marks the anniversary date of Yogacharya BKS Iyengar's birth date. It was on 14 December 1918 that Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar, later to be famously known as BKS Iyengar, was born. Born into a poor family in Bellur, Kolar district, Karnataka, India, he was the 11th of 13 children. BKS Iyengar's mother was stricken with influenza during the pregnancy. As a result, he was born a sickly child and in his childhood years suffered from health problems including typhoid, malaria, and tuberculosis.

The odds were against BKS Iyengar reaching adulthood, let alone the age of ninety-five having become the greatest exponent of Yoga the world has yet seen.

On 14 December 2016, we celebrate the life of Yogacharya BKS Iyengar and show our gratitude for his teaching. This day co-incides with the last day of the Winter Sādhanā. Come along on this day for a led practice.

Philosophical Discourses

Swami Abhishek Chaitanya Giri Maharaj will present discourses in Hong Kong from 15 to 24 October 2015. The discourses are an opportunity for students of Yoga to reflect more deeply on the philosophical precepts of Yoga. A student can clarify concepts, apply these concepts to one's own experiences, and ultimately, gain a deeper understanding of one's own self.

About Swami Abhishek Chaitanya Giri Maharaj

Swami Abhishek Chaitanya Giri Maharaji is currently the head of Jagadguru Sannyasa Ashram in Rishikesh. He is respectfully called as Maha-Mandaleshwar — “Keeper and Defender of the Vedas”. Receiving formal initiation into sannyasa in 2013, and being made a Maha-Mandaleshwar, he moved to Rishikesh where the Sanyas Ashram is located.

There will be two streams of discourses, a stream on Blessings of the Enlightened One, a stream on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and one discourse on the Aims of Life.

Discourse: Aims of Life

Swamiji will present a discourse particularly inspired by the concept of the Purusarthas  (the four aims of life). This concept helps the listener to reflect on the aims of life. It can help one to gain clarity on their goals and purpose in life. The talk is scheduled to allow those who work office hours to be able to attend before their work day begins. Tea, coffee and toast will be offered after the talk.

Vegetarian Picnic & Discourse

Join us for an outdoor gathering and vegetarian pot-luck picnic with our esteemed guest Mahamandeleshwar Swami Abhishek Chaitanya Giri. During the picnic, Swami Abhishek Chaitanya will give a one-hour discourse. The picnic will be held on the lawn in Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park, a 10-minute walk from our centre on the harbour front.

Geetaji's Summer Solstice Sequence

21 June was chosen as International Day of Yoga as it coincides with the Summer Solstice. The date is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and has special significance in many parts of the world. Geeta Iyengar has created a specific sequence for International Yoga Day taking into account that it coincides with the Summer Solstice. This sequence is being taught in Iyengar Yoga centres all over the world.

“We are all yoga sādhakās and sādhanā is our very breath, our prāna . The United Nations has declared 21 st June as the International Yoga Day, which will be celebrated all over the world. For us everyday is yoga day. However to respect this special day [the concept of which was suggested by Guruji] in a talk in Bangalore sometime in 2011-2012, to respect Guruji, we have thought of a special practice programme for this day. Many students from across the world approached me if they could have a special sequence of practice for this day… the (summer) solstice.” - Geeta Iyengar

In this class, Ursula Moser will teach the “summer solstice sequence” created by Geetaji.

Price: regular 90-minute class prices apply. Consider bringing a friend for free (see below).

Free Class for Breast Cancer

Bobby Clennell and the Iyengar Yoga Centre of Hong Kong are offering a class for breast cancer patients, survivors, and thrivers.

Bobby Clennell is a senior Iyengar Yoga teacher from New York. She is experienced in teaching yoga for the health of the breasts and the lymphatic system. She teaches a class in at The Iyengar Yoga Institute of New York for breast health and has done a lot of work with students who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Bobby Clennell gave an interview with the “itsallyogababy" website last year. It was reported:

"Her latest yoga project is focused on yoga for breast health. While there are not a lot of studies that indicate the effects of yoga on the breasts, Clennell has seen in her teaching that yoga helps women after breast cancer, and she believes it could possibly even be a preventative measure. Her work, however, is focused on all aspects of breast health, not just treating or preventing breast cancer, and it reflects an expanding awareness in our culture about this important issue.”

To access the full article and listen to the audio interview with Bobby click here.

Swami Abhishek Chaitanya, after being officially ordained as Mahamandaleshwar (keeper and defender of the Vedas), is now known as Swami Abhishek Chaitanya Giri Maharaj. One of the youngest ever anointed with this title, he is the Mahamandaleshwar of the Kerala Ashram in Rishikesh, India. Discourses on Vedanta.

Swamiji will present a general stream of discourses on Vedanta (ranging on a variety of topics and drawing from various ancient texts). There will be an opportunity to ask questions that students would like clarified and explained. Vedanta means "the end of knowledge”. It is a philosophy. It is universal in its application and relevant to all cultures and countries regardless of religious backgrounds.

Seeing IS Believing

“We think of intelligence and perception as taking place exclusively in our brains, but yoga teaches us that awareness and intelligence must permeate the body. Each part of the body literally has to be engulfed by the intelligence. We must create a marriage between the awareness of the body and that of the mind.”

— BKS Iyengar

In order for the student to see and understand themselves more accurately, photos and video of the students practicing asana will be taken during the workshop. The photos and video will be reviewed during this workshop to help refine the understanding and perception that each student has of themselves in the context of yogasana.

Legs And Feet

Legs and Feet is a three day Iyengar Yoga intensive where students will learn how and why correct leg and foot actions make all the difference in a pose. Most importantly students will feel how the legs and feet affect the spine and make the asanas safer. We need to work on the muscles and the bones, work with and against gravity. The firmness of the legs must be felt in each and every pose because the legs support the spine.

This intensive is for Level II and above students.

You are encouraged to take the series of three classes. If this is not possible attendance at individual sessions is permitted.

Yoga Chanting

At the beginning of many Iyengar Yoga classes, we chant an invocation to Patanjali to honour the ancient tradition of yoga.

Geeta Iyengar, explaining why we chant, says:

"We chant so that at the very beginning that feeling of sanctification comes from inside, with the feeling of surrendering oneself, because nothing can be learned in this world unless you have the humility to learn."

Shobhna Chellaram will be leading a session on chanting that will encompass the Patanjali chant as well as other chants that are often recited before auspicious occasions. Learn the chants as well as the meaning of the chants.

Date:
Thursday, 13 February, 6:00pm - 7:30pm

Cost: $250   (100% of the proceeds are donated to BKS Iyengar to support the charitable work he is carrying out in the village of Bellur, South India.)
